Government polytechnic College, Udhagamandalam was started in the year 1982 with an intake of 120 students. Pending construction of own building, the institution was initially housed in a sprawling European bungalow near hill bunk .In 1988 the institution was shifted to the present premises after own building were constructed in a sylvan surrounding on the out –skirts of Ooty. Began with only four branches with a moderate intake of 120 students at its inception, the college today offers six branches namely civil, mechanical, electronics & communication , electrical & electronics, Instrumentation and control engineering and modern office practice.

Admission

Condition for Admission to First Year

Candidate for admission to the Diploma Course shall be required to have passed the SSLC Examination of the Board of Secondary Education, Tamilnadu. (or)
The Anglo-Indian High School Examination with elgibility for higher Secondary Course in Tamin Nadu. (or)
The Matriculation examination conducted in Tamilnadu. (or)

Any other examination recognized as equivalent to the SSLC Examination by the Board of Secondary Education, Tamilnadu.

Eligibility for admission to Second year

A pass in HSC or Equivalent (Maths/Vocational group) for Engineering and Accountancy for MOP
The admission will be restricted to each 10% of the sanctioned intake of the Polytechnic in all branches for both Academic and Vocational Stream candidates.

Note: In addition, at the time of admission the candidate will have to satisfy certain minimum requirements which may be prescribed from time to time with regard to the marks, in the qualifying examinations and subject to the usual reservation for SC/ST, BC, MBC, DNC & OC.

MODE OF SELECTION

Regular Diploma Courses

Selection of eligible candidates for the courses in the Polytechnic Colleges and Special Institutions will be made based on the total marks secured in the qualifying examination and the ranking will be done in the order of total marks secured by the candidates in the SSLC / Equivalent examination following communal reservation. In respect of candidates whose maximum marks in the qualifying examination more than 500 as per scheme, the maximum marks shall be reduced to a base of 500 and rank arrived at along with other candidates.

Sandwich Courses

For 50% seats in the Sandwich Diploma Courses the selection will be done based on the total marks secured in the qualifying examination as for the regular courses following merit and communal reservation.

For the remaining 50% seats in the Sandwich Diploma Courses the eligible candidates sponsored by the approved industries will be admitted.

The list of industries which are participating in the Inplant Training etc., are alone eligible to sponsor candidates.

Sandwich courses will extend for a period for 3 & 1/2 year (7 semesters). Candidates admitted to sandwich courses will attend the Institution study as well as Inplant Training in one of the connected industries.

These candidates should satisfy the rules relating to eligibility rules prescribed.

Eligibility for the award of Diploma

No candidate shall be eligible for the Diploma unless He / She has undergone the prescribed course of study for a period of not less than 3 academic years in an institution when joined in first year and two years if joined under lateral scheme in the second year affiliated to the state board to technical education and training.
