Government Polytechnic College, Tiruchirappalli is an institution providing technical education and training to both men and women of secondary, higher secondary and diploma levels.

This College aims to become and Institute of Excellence in providing Full-time and Part-time diploma courses.

Government of Tamil Nadu sanctioned the establishment of this Govt. Polytechnic College during the third Five Year Plan. The College started functioning from June 1963 at the premises at Seshasyee Institute of Technology, Trichy. Within a short period of three years, it was moved to the present campus in June 1966. This Polytechnic has well constructed buildings and fully equipped laboratories and workshops built on a sprawling 96 acres of land. Now it has come to be recognized as premier technical institution in the State of Tamil Nadu.

This College is situated at Thuvakudimalai, 16 km from Trichy, on the Trichy – Thanjavur National Highway. It is flanked on one side by the well – known National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NITT), and on the other side by the public sector giant Bharat Heavy ELectricals Ltd. (BHEL).

Besides, there are a number of other small scale units as well as major industries like the Ordnance Factory Trichy (OFT), Railway Workshop, Golden rock, Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP), Magnetic Hydro Dynamic Power Project (MHD) and Heavy Alloy Penetration Project (HAPP), in its vicinity. Thus, the students of this Polytechnic College are well exposed to the industrial climate prevailing in this region.

Admissions

Government Polytechnic College, Tiruchirappalli is to offer technical education to men and women for a duration of three years for X standard passed students, for a duration of two years for XII standard passed students and to offer Diploma education for a period of four years for X standard passed students in the part-time stream.

This college is also to impart technical knowledge and skills to the rural, poor and down-trodden people under Community Polytechnic Scheme.

This College is scrupulously follow the rules and regulations laid down by the Government of Tamil Nadu and also by AICTE

REGULAR

Admission to the Polytechnic College for the three-year Full Time Diploma course is done strictly on the basis of marks scored in the SSLC examination and as per the reservation policy of the Government of Tamil Nadu for OC, BC, MBC, SC & ST candidates. In addition, seats are reserved for the following categories of students. They are selected and allotted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai. Separate applications must be sent to the Directorate for this purpose.

2. Sports persons

SHIFT SYSTEM

There are two shifts.

1.  I Shift  – 8.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
2.  II Shift – 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

LATERAL ENTRY

Direct admission to the second year of the course is also made from those who have passed the Higher Secondary Course (Academic and Vocational) ITI. Admission under this category is restricted to 10% of the regular intake of students. Here too, the admission is made on the basis of merit and the reservation policy of the State Govt.

PART TIME

Admission to Part Time Diploma course is done every year on the basis of the candidate’s experience in specified industries / concerns situated within 60KM from the Polytechnic and / or their marks scored in SSLC examination and in accordance with the State Govt’s reservation policy.
